Michael Maguire officially made the move from Sydney to Brisbane on Wednesday afternoon.
But it seems he has been busy making big changes at the Broncos since he was announced as the club’s new head coach.
After taking over from Kevin Walters earlier this month, he is set to usher in a new era at the football club, but he still has a long way to go to reverse Brisbane’s woes last season, finishing 12th on the NRL ladder.
It was announced on Thursday that he is taking big steps in his bid to bring about change at the club. The Daily Telegraph reports that the Broncos hierarchy are planning to remove Allan Langer from his on-field coaching role.
The club will instead offer their former captain a role as corporate ambassador.
Langer, a Clive Churchill medallist who led the Broncos to four premierships, is expected to work with sponsors.
The Broncos Hall of Famer was appointed assistant coach under Ivan Henjack in 2009 and has been a fixture at the club ever since.
It is understood Maguire will speak to the 58-year-old about his potential new role.
“Alf is coming into the organisation,” Maguire had said.
“I haven’t really seen him properly yet but I’ve spoken to Alf on the phone and he’s a great guy.
“I’ve had a bit of time with him over the years.
“Now that I’m moving up, I want to sit down with Alf and see how it all fits together.
Broncos legend Allan Langer’s time as cross-country coach at the club could come to an end
New coach Michael Maguire will offer Langer (pictured) a new role at the club as an ambassador, but it is understood he will no longer be working as a technical coach
“He’s obviously one of the greats of the club and a very popular figure in football,” he added, making it clear he would try to keep Langer at the club.
“I think everyone likes Alf, but the best thing is how we build our program… Alf can play so many different roles within the Broncos organisation.”
Langer is highly regarded as one of Australia’s best rugby league players, with Walters previously heaping praise on the former halfback, claiming: “He’s a great ally to have and is a real Broncos man, which makes it even more special.
“We’ll carry Alf in a coffin.”
However, Langer had reportedly been considering his future at the club after Walters’ departure left him “shattered”, according to the Courier Mail.
It comes as Maguire looks to make several changes at the club in a bid to return the Broncos to their previous position in the league.
The manager had told the outlet that he would consider his future during a recent family holiday.
It would be a huge loss for the club if Langer were to leave, as he was a fan favourite for many years, with Ricky Stuart once describing him as “the best Bronco.”
