James Martin has opened up about the invisible battle he faces while filming his ITV cookery show due to a health issue.

The 52-year-old TV chef has been a household name on screen for over 30 years, having fronted Saturday Kitchen before presenting his current show, James Martin’s Saturday Morning.

But despite the show being a huge success, James recently revealed that viewers are unaware of the hidden challenges he faces when making the hit show.

The star recently appeared on Lose Women’s Kaye Adams’ show on BBC Radio Scotland, where she spoke about how ‘fascinated’ she was by James’ ability to cook and entertain his celebrity guests at the same time, likening the skill to ‘choreography’.

However, James admitted it wasn’t as easy as it seems, with his ‘severe’ dyslexia making it ‘really difficult’, The Express reports.

James laughed at Kaye’s praise, saying: “I watch you do your thing while I listen to music and you’re like a conductor. I can’t do what you do and I certainly can’t do it after being on Loose Women with you.

“I admire anyone who can do that.”

Opening up about his on-screen struggles, he continued: “I can cook and talk at the same time, strangely enough, but I still find presenting really difficult.

‘I’m severely dyslexic, so reading everything off a teleprompter is really hard work, so when I get to cook and chat, I feel at home there.’

James has previously spoken about his dyslexia, revealing that he wasn’t diagnosed until he was 30 after struggling with it for years.

During his show earlier this year, James revealed the secret way he overcame his issues while filming the cooking show.

Speaking to newsreader Lucrezia Millarini, he said: ‘Well, as you read, I’m severely dyslexic. I have a wonderful wife called Sam, Sam [on the] teleprompter, who puts things in bigger letters for me so I can read them clearly.’

It comes after James gave an update on his cancer battle during an appearance on Lorraine earlier this year.

The TV chef previously underwent surgery to remove facial cancer after his initial diagnosis in 2018.

Lorraine asked if he was feeling OK during the star’s performance in April, to which the chef replied: “Yes, the stitches have fallen out, as you know, the last time I was on I was in the middle of an operation.

“At the moment the stitches have fallen out of my body and that’s clear, further and higher!”

James first went public with his cancer battle last year when his foul-mouthed tirade against his TV crew was revealed in an extraordinary leaked tape recorded shortly after his diagnosis.

The TV star criticised the crew working on his cookery show James Martin’s Spanish Adventure, with the extraordinary tape leaked to The Sun.

He told the newspaper that the outburst was the culmination of a series of unfortunate events in his life, which began with the death of his grandfather, followed by a house invasion by masked burglars and finally a cancer diagnosis.

He said: ‘I was then diagnosed with cancer in my face and had to have surgery, which couldn’t happen until two days before Christmas when we finished filming. It has come back several times since then and I need regular treatment.’
