Now that the iPhone 16 has launched, we can start thinking about the iPhone 17 – and a new rumor suggests that the most expensive Pro Max model will be the only device in the series to make the jump to 12GB of RAM.
This comes from reliable tipsters who say that it’s “more likely” that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will get 12GB, while the iPhone 17 Pro will remain at 8GB (which is in all current 2024 models).
According to this leak, Samsung is experiencing issues with its memory module production line, meaning that there won’t be enough components for the millions of iPhone 17 Pros that Apple plans to order, as well as the iPhone 17 Pro Max phones.
This isn’t an entirely new rumor either: respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously said that 12GB of RAM would be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, though he didn’t go into detail about the reasoning behind it.

We’re clearly still a long way off from the launch of thee iPhone 17 rang, which should arrive in September if Apple sticks to its usual schedule. It’s always possible that plans could change between now and then.
However, we know that RAM – which gives devices the space to think – is important for powering Apple Intelligence, so it’s possible that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will outperform the others in the range when it comes to AI tasks.
The 8GB of RAM on the iPhone 16 phones is a brand new upgrade: you may recall that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus had 6GB of RAM on board, while the Pro models both have 8GB (and therefore Apple Intelligence support).

These are just the early iPhone 17 rumors, but we’ve heard quite a few already – not least that the iPhone 16 Plus will eventually be replaced by a new iPhone 17 Air, which will apparently utilize a thinner product form factor.
